The Company

S. G. S. The company has achieved significant growth and is a recognised contractor on the Humberside Refineries at Immingham and Killingholme in addition to such Clients as AMEC; Banner Holdings Ltd.; Birse Construction Ltd.; Bovis Lend Lease; Clugston Construction; Fabricom/Caxios; HBGC Ltd,; Jacobs Catalytic; TotalFinaElf Refineries; ICHP Conoco; Jack Tighe Ltd; M & B Services Ltd.; RMBG Partnership and Smith & Nephew Medical. The company has grown steadily since its inception and moved to larger premises of some 1.5 acres hard standing in 2003, this gave the company the stability of its own premises with ample space for future development and expansion. SGS constantly refreshes and increases its stock of scaffolding materials to be able to meet the needs of our clients, expenditure last year was £500k bringing our stock holding to approximately £2m.

Geography

SGS has participated in projects throughout the UK, our operatives are willing to travel and we occasionally directly employ local labour when the need arises and it meets with our strict level of competence and certification. We are adept at becoming part of the contractors' compound and also have the facility to carry out on site training not only to our own operatives but to all that it would benefit. A dedicated Site Manager, fully competent and trained to IOSH standard, is also assigned to the project and with our flexible workforce, we can meet the ebbs and flows of the work requirement thus helping the client to maintain the work schedule. Currently we have operatives working full time in Manchester, Loughborough, Derby, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds, Catterick and several sites in North East Lincolnshire.

Workforce

The company consists of c.150 people all directly employed, a quarter of our employees have been with us for over 5 years, as we have grown we have employed more people and retained them through our standards of training and rewards [50% 3+ years & 70% 1+ year]. Our scaffolding operatives are all C.I.T.B./CISRS Registered and Trained and have successfully completed the full two-day Safety Passport Scheme that is recognised by Major Contractors and all of the Oil Refineries in the Humberside region. All our operatives have been trained to the SG4:05 guidelines and as part of their documented induction to the company, we also have 100% compliance with CSCS card holding for non engineering sites. The company carries out regular training and maintains a training register to enable us to keep all certificates up to date, copies of which are kept on computer file for instant access. We employ, sponsor and train up to 6 trainees at a time through their CITB training course. SGS is also a long time member of the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation as well as the Humberside Local Purchasing Initiative.

Health, Safety & Quality

The Company prides itself on its Efficiency, Reliability and Speed of Response and has maintained an admirable Safety Record through our fully implemented Safety Policy. We recognise that the company's future revolves around Safety and Quality and we are taking proactive steps to help us maintain our reputation in this area. We employ a full time Health, Safety & Environment Officer who carries our regular documented Site Audits, this also enables S. G. S. Limited to keep at the forefront of the latest and future changes within Health and Safety Legislation and Best Working Practices. The BSC carried out its 5 Star Health and Safety Audit on the company and awarded us Four Stars for our systems and commitment. These steps, together with the implementation of our Company Training Plan will keep the company and all its personnel at the cutting edge of our industry.

Partnerships

SGS has realised that in today's market with tough budgets, deadlines and targets, there is a need for contractors and sub-contractors to get together to make all aspects of the job run smoothly and on a cost effective basis. We work with our clients in the early planning stages to offer advice on minimising the cost of the scaffolding, making access multi-user, multi-trade, etc. and reducing duplication of work. Assistance will also be given to help schedule access in the most cost effective way. The company will work in various ways as it helps the client e.g. Lump Sum Price or Target Costing with saving sharing. Two recent Target Cost projects are Clugston Construction at Newlincs Waste and for Caxios at Mitsui Slue project, BP site [£1.5m], both projects involved pre-determining the scope of works, regular monthly meetings with the client and help in forecasting budgets, both projects came in with a budget saving. This has helped us to achieve Category 1 status with HBGC which gives us preference on their tenders, we also have Preferred Vendor status with Clugston Construction; Birse Group; Bovis Lend Lease; HBGC; Irvine Whitlock and Keith Walton Brickwork. We realise that we still have to price competitively whilst maintaining our 'Added Value' of Partnership, Training and Health, Safety & Environment.
